How to Get Started

You know, if you've ever wanted to get started on your family history, the best time to do it is NOW. You don't know how long some of your most valuable resources will be around (living grandparents, or great grand parents if you're lucky). Here's how to get started:
  1. First thing's first, you need to fill out a 4/5 generation sheet with everything you know about your family. Here's a link to a free one you can just print and fill out.
  2. Make a copy for each set of generational parents you have. By that, I mean one page for your parents, one page for your each of your grandparents, and great-grand parents if you have them.
  3. Take a copy to your parents, ask for missing information, any corrections, and especially if there is someone else in the family that is working on the family's history. Continue with each set of grand and great-grand parents.
  4. Choose a fact you would like to find (if any is missing) or a family member to learn more about.
  5. Determine a source that you could search through to find information
  6. Look through source
  7. Update information (especially your research log)
  8. Repeat 4-7.
That's the basics of genealogy research!
